Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming e-commerce by changing how businesses understand customers, manage operations, personalize services and make decisions. This paper examines the role of AI in e-commerce with particular attention to business opportunities, operational challenges and sustainable development. The study adopts a descriptive and conceptual research approach based on secondary information from academic literature, industry reports and established digital-commerce practices. The paper discusses major applications of AI including product recommendation systems, conversational chatbots, customer analytics, demand forecasting, fraud detection, dynamic pricing, inventory management and digital marketing. These applications can improve customer experience, reduce operational costs, increase efficiency and support faster managerial decisions. At the same time, the adoption of AI creates challenges related to data privacy, cybersecurity, algorithmic bias, transparency, employment concerns and the cost of implementing advanced technologies. The study further highlights the sustainability potential of AI through demand prediction, optimized logistics, reduced inventory waste, paperless transactions and resource-efficient business processes. The paper argues that responsible AI adoption requires strong data governance, ethical standards, employee skills, transparent algorithms and continuous monitoring. Sustainable e-commerce will therefore depend not only on technological innovation but also on responsible business practices that balance profitability, customer trust, social responsibility and environmental objectives.
