Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a major driver of transformation in e-commerce by changing how firms understand customers, design digital experiences, manage inventories, optimize logistics, communicate with consumers, and make strategic decisions. The rapid development of machine learning, recommendation systems, natural language processing, computer vision, generative AI, and AI-enabled agents has created new opportunities for e-commerce firms to improve efficiency, personalization, innovation, and market reach. At the same time, the sustainability of AI-enabled e-commerce cannot be evaluated only through financial performance. It also requires attention to environmental efficiency, responsible consumption, privacy, fairness, transparency, consumer autonomy, employment, and digital inclusion. This paper examines the emerging opportunities created by AI in e-commerce and develops a conceptual pathway through which AI capabilities can contribute to sustainable business growth. The study adopts a conceptual literature-review approach and synthesizes academic and institutional literature on AI, e-commerce, digital marketing, consumer behaviour, responsible AI, and sustainable development. The review shows that AI can support sustainable growth through five interconnected pathways: intelligent customer engagement, operational and supply chain optimization, data-driven decision-making, sustainable consumption support, and business-model innovation. However, these benefits are conditional on responsible data governance, transparency, cybersecurity, human oversight, algorithmic fairness, energy-aware AI deployment, and inclusive access to digital technologies. The paper proposes a responsible AI-enabled e-commerce framework in which technological capability, organizational readiness, consumer trust, and sustainability governance jointly influence long-term business value. The study concludes that AI should be treated not merely as an automation technology but as a strategic capability that must be aligned with economic, social, and environmental objectives. The paper provides implications for e-commerce firms, policymakers, researchers, and managers seeking to combine innovation with responsible and sustainable growth.
